“Do you suppose that I came to grant peace on earth? I tell you, no, but rather division (Luke 12:51)
I’m reading a book called “Reason for God” by Timothy Keller, pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church. In the book he has written that one of the results of atheism is violence. He writes that atheism desires to destroy religion on the basis that religion is a barrier to world peace. However, Keller rightly argues that as demonstrated in the 20th century by the Soviet, Communist China and Nazi regimes that when religion is forcibly suppressed the result is violence (the very thing that drives the desire to do away with religion). He quotes Alister McGrath:
“The 20th century gave rise to one the greatest and most distressing paradoxes of human history: that the greatest intolerance and violence of that century were practiced by those who believed that religion caused intolerance and violence”
Atheism isn’t the answer to peace. There can be no peace without knowing Jesus because He is the Prince of Peace.
