I’ve just read the book “Vintage Jesus” written by Mark Driscoll. I was expecting a robust and fully biblical account of the Christian doctrine of Christ .. and I wasn’t disappointed. Driscoll presents a clear, accurate and humourous description of what the Bible teaches about the nature and ministry of Jesus. Gerry Breshear contributes to the ‘Answers to common Questions’ at the end of each chapter which offers thought provoking answers to some timely questions. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that desires to know who Jesus really is – seeker, new believer or seasoned pastor alike. However, one criticism I have is that he didn’t address the issue of Jesus as Almighty God. In the first chapter, I think, he takes time to skillfully argue that Jesus is God – but for most Christians (and Mormons & Jehovahs Witnesses) that is a given. What is harder to argue is that Jesus is Almighty God. That Jesus and Jehovah are one and the same and different. Certainly the conversations that I have with Jehovahs Witnesses ends up debating whether or not Jesus is Himself omniscient, omnipresent and omnipotent or, as they argue, that He has been given these attributes being a perfect creation of God.
Anyway, despite that, a fully reliable and biblical book that I wouldn’t hesitate to give to anyone that seeks to know the Biblical Jesus.
