I’ve just finished reading Spiritual Leadership by Oswald Sanders. When I’m reading a book I’ll usually underline and make comments in margin. So I thought I’d share some of those thoughts and underlines with you – this is not exhaustive by any means but it does reflect some of the issues I’ve been battling with recently :

  • The Spirit of leadership is found in servant hood
    • There is no better example of the servant leader than Jesus – the only time Jesus said “here is an example for you to follow” was when he washed the disciples feet.
    • Humility is the hall mark of the leader
      • “the axe cannot boast of the trees it has cut down. It could do nothing but for the woodsman”
  • A leader is essentially a mover – of other people and of God
    • Of other people – Li Hung says “There are only 3 kinds of people – those who are immovable, those who are movable, and those who move them”
      • a leader doesn’t get overcome by details but does little things well, ensuring the most important thing remains the most important thing
      • they know how to select people for specific tasks, and then let them go, trusting them to complete the task with getting involved
      • they make clear decisions
        • the key is not what to do but living the consequence
      • they inspire confidence
      • is growing
    • Of God
      • to move people a leader must be able to move God through prayer
  • Example is much more potent than precept
    • “Leaders must draw the best out of people, and friendship does that far better than prolonged argument or mere logic”
    • Zeal, drive and inspiration are infectious
  • A leader must use time wisely. They will work while others play, study whist others snooze, pray while others daydream.
  • Vision is important and involves foresight AND insight
    • “Eyes that look are common but eyes that see are rare”
    • A leader’s time is not their own but God’s to use at His pleasure
  • Spiritual leadership requires Spirit-filled people
    • Christian service is an expression of the Holy Spirit’s work through the individual
    • The spiritual leader should outpace the rest of the church
      • the leader should be kept at boiling point (spiritually)
      • Water rises to the level of it’s source
  • God’s work isn’t dependent upon me (how refreshing)
    • “no work of God will be left destitute until its purposes are achieved” – regardless of the leader. If the church is moving to a different phase of ministry then just like Joshua replaced Moses, God will replace the leader.
      • therefore I am to train leaders to take over from me when God has used me up – I must work to make myself dispensable – this comes from one on one discipleship not wholesale production
