And He has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings (Acts 17:26)
Although I don’t watch Big Brother I couldn’t have escaped the news about the “racist” comments and treatment of Shilpa Shetty, the Bollywwod actress, that have been all over the news this week. I cannot comment on whether I think they are racist (they certainly seem to be but I’ve seen enough media stories to know that often things aren’t always protrayed honestly).
However, it did get me thinking about the whole racist thing … a recall a story I heard, or read about an Australian Bible college student who argued with his professor that the college should not sponsor missionaries who go to evangelise Aborigines because, he believed, they were an inferior race and non-human and therefore could not be saved. I would suggest that this is a result, not of Biblical understanding, but Biblical misunderstanding. You see the Bible declares that we all have come from one man and one women. Science confirms this. When we move away from this understanding and try and argue that God used evolution, or worse yet evolution happened by itself, we are in danger of treating other people with less respect than ourselves. Hitler was an evolutionist and treated the Jews, Gypsies and other groups as inferior, and therefore argued that they needed to be eliminated. While most evolutionists would not go so far as to believe this, there is a danger with that idea. More recent history has seen other results of this in what is commonly termed as “ethnic cleansing’. Even within a segment of the church today, there is a intense prejudice in regard to one’s skin colour.
My point is: all racial problems could easily be solved if all people built their thinking on God’s Word, and would believe that God created man and women. The fact is that all human beings are children of Adam and need to build their thinking on God’s Word. Then, regardless of their culture and colour, humans will live in peace and understanding.
